If you you can easily gaze for hours at birds as they play in their bird cages, if you love to be outdoors and if you admire the wonders of Mother Nature then bird-watching may be for you. It takes a certain level of knowledge and practice to become an expert bird-watcher. If you’re interested in this hobby but aren’t sure where to start, check out my tips for identifying and differentiating between bird species below.

  1. The first thing you should do is invest in a bird identification guide. There are many quality guides out there so just head to your local bookstore and pick one up that relates your particular region and interests.
  2. Next purchase a good set of binoculars. They will help you to identify minute physical characteristics and mannerisms. They will help you to hone in on your recognition skills.
  3. Next find a good place to start your bird-watching. In most cases, your very own backyard will be perfect. It will be a convenient location and you can easily spend hours and hours discovering native birds in your area.
  4. After you’ve been watching for a while, consider joining a bird-watching club or group. Many people are surprised to find out that it is an incredibly popular hobby so it’s highly likely that there is at least one group with your city limits.
  5. Practice, practice, practice! The best way for you to become an expert is to bird-watch all of the time. Keep a journal and write down what you see so that you can cross-reference it with your guide book. Eventually you’ll be able to identify birds without the use of an outside source.

Located 175 km away from Delhi on Agra- Jaipur road, this park is declared as World Heritage Site. Prominent bird species here are migratory birds like Siberian Crane, Geese, Ducks, Raptors, Warblers and Waders. Other frequently seen birds are pelicans, storks, herons, egrets and kingfishers. Bird Watching in Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary

Spread across vast 800 sq km, this park boasts of 200 species of birds. Situated in the hills of Aravalli, birds species mainly found here are Wryneck Woodpecker Babbler, White Breasted Kingfisher, Little Brown Dove, Small Minivet, Gray Hornbill, Crested Serpent Eagle, Black/Red Headed Bunting, Golden Oriole, Little Brown Dove, Small Minivet, Great Gray Shrike, Pale Harrier and Tailor Bird and many more.  

Bird Watching in Corbett National Park

There is a mind boggling 600 species of birds in this sanctuary.  Bird watchers from all over the world come here to see these varieties. The park located in the western Himalayas in Uttaranchal is spread in an area of 600 sq km. The most prominent bird species are bareheaded goose, snipe, gull, duck, grepe, graylag, wagtail and sandpiper, raptors, darters, egrets, black-necked stork and cormorants are commonly seen here.

Bird Watching in Sunderbans National Park

Just 72 km away from Kolkata, this park is spread across 2,585 sq km. Labeled as a World Heritage Site, this place is known for its mangrove forest. Bird sanctuary at Sajnekhali offers home to quite a lot of variety of birds like White ibis, Heron, Egret, Cotton Teal, Brahmini kite, Tern, Curlew.

Bird Watching in Kaziranga National Park

Spread across 430 sq km and situated on the bank of River Brahmaputra in Assam this park is made up of thick forest and lakes, the perfect conditions for the birds to thrive. Most prominent bird species are Pallas's fish eagle, black necked stork, lesser adjutant stork, grey pelican, Bengal floricans, grey peacock-pheasant, green imperial pigeon. 

Bird Watching in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Spread in a total area of 777 sq km, 350 sq km area was made into the Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve, better known as the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Situated in Kerala, this sanctuary houses 330 species of birds out of which like Darters, the Malabar Hornbill, Kingfishers, Cormorants and racket-tailed Drongoes are well known.

Famous Bird Watching Destination: Burgas, Black Sea Coast in Bulgaria

The city of Bourgas (also spelled Burgas)is located to the south on the Bulgarian Black sea coast, and is the fourth largest city in Bulgaria.

The City itself is situated in the Bay of Bourgas and is surrounded by Salt plains and protected marsh land. They're protected, as they are on the "Via Pontic" migratory bird route.

The Autumn bird migration is an experience not to be missed. This is the time of year when massive amounts of birds fly down the Black sea coast, making their way to warmer wintering locations in the south.

During this time, thousands of Black Storks, Harriers, Vultures, lesser spotted and short toed Eagles, Buzzards and many other species pass through the area. Rare European raptors can also be spotted as well as huge amounts of smaller birds, some incredibly scarce, as the salt plains, marshland, lakes and reedbeds around Bourgas make perfect cover for tired birds.

The large areas of forestry to the south of Bourgas are also home, and resting place, to many other sought after woodland species. The forestry areas are massive by UK standards and you could easily get lost, I would recommend hiring the services of a local guide, as wild boar and bears can still be found there!

Specialist Holiday companies in the UK are available with set itineries to explore this fabulous region during the migration period, or for the more adventurous there are numerous flights that go directly to Bourgas, which makes an ideal base for exploring the region with it's many Hotels, Bars, shops and Restaurants. The people that are being categorized as bird watchers are those who are only starting out. Everybody who is into this activity first become a bird watcher or just a mere observer. Their curiosity actually lead them to look and then look more until they've developed a habit of looking farther to see what the birds are doing and how they do it.

For such type, a journal would be fine. This is where they jot down their observations for the purpose of not forgetting. These notes would actually be helpful if they take their hobby to a different level, by being a birder. But for now, let the simple note taking do it for them. Theirs is more simple task because what they see is far from scientific because they still don't have the equipment and the ability to see beyond what their naked eyes seem to tell them.

Birders
These are the more passionate people about the craft. They are not merely hobbyists, they do this to study and relate their observation with scientific research. This group would invest on materials to strengthen their claims. They are always on the lookout for the newest technology that could help them navigate more thoroughly. Birders go where the birds are.

Through research, they go the extra mile to travel where the birds that they haven't seen or haven't been seen by many are situated. The keep track of what happened on their journey. They take notes along the way.

Life List
This is what the electronic or written records contain. Such things can be done by the birders. As they search for the species, the venues in which they could find more types, and looking out for yet to be discovered kinds of birds, they contain it all in a life list.

The information in a life list should include where a certain type of bird was seen, classifying the bird and the date when it was seen. Noting what the bird's usual activities are and how they went on about such is also part of this.

The birders have variety and long list of this kind. It shows their history as an enthusiast of how far they have gone in terms of the activity and how much they have already seen and learned in the process.

They can always go back to this data to change or modify some information depending on their further observation. This is the reason why as days or years go by and as the number of life lists being made by a birder piles up the data gear more towards being scientific because more proofs are available when anyone tries to contest what was recorded.

Keeping a bird watching life list would also benefit people in the future. As the study about the different types of birds become more and more varied, people can always refer on the information provided by the birders on this list for further researches to become more and more accurate.

Given its comprehensively small size, Uganda is agraduably the richest African birding watching destination. Located almost at the center of the continent, Uganda attracts migrant from the north and the south anfdhas mor eindigenous birds than many of her neighbours.

No other country can match the amazing diversity of habitants particularly its wetlands and this richness is reflected in the ever increasing bird list which currently runs to more than 1000 species, from great eagles to tiny iridescent sunbirds. Flamingos gather on the smaller lakes, which abound with kingfishers, bee-eaters and fish eagles. The plains and scrubland are home to an exceptional variety of bird life. Bwindi gorilla tracking forest reserve, Kibale forest national park, lake Mburo national park, Murchison falls national park and Queen Elizabeth game park are growing popularity among bird-watchers.

Among the many important species of avid are the shoebill stork/> , the white crested turaco, the Rwenzori torcao, the kivu ground thrush, shelly’s crimson wing and the Rwenzori battis.

As part of the programme to improved facilities for bird-watchers, the Uganda Wildlife Authority has developed a number of new hides and strategic sites and there has been a new survey of Ugandan birds, which has resulted in the publication of ‘where to watch birds in Uganda.’

Using the criteria developed by Bird Life International to identify Important Bird Areas, 30 sites qualified for recognition as important Bird Areas in Uganda. The full list of sites and the criteria for their selection can be found in the published book (Byaruhanga et al 2001). Uganda also has a list of 207 “Birds to watch” in the Red Data List for East Africa (Bennun and Njoroge, 1996).

The bird sites were identified and defined on the basis of both the number of bird species and the census figures of each. Some sites are exceptionally important for maintaining a very large number of other taxa dependent upon the habitats and ecosystems they contain.

All the ten National parks in Uganda qualified as IBAs together with three Wildlife Reserves and 7 National Forest Reserves.

There are also 10 IBA's that are not protected; These are some of the exceptional bird watching sites in the country. They include, among others, Mabamba and Lutembe Bays as well as the Lake Kyoga sites such as Lakes Opeta and Bisina. These are also complemented by public privately owned Leisure parks, gardens, fish ponds, woodlands and forests, which together make Uganda best described as a haven for bird watching.

Although bird watching is an activity that can be done virtually anywhere on the planet, Africa remains one of the most popular destinations on the planet for a bird watch adventure. Specifically, there is a substantial portion of the tourism industry in Southern Africa that is meeting the needs of bird watching in Africa. Service providers recognize the needs and desires of bird enthusiasts and create safaris and adventures designed with the serious bird watcher in mind.

What Region is Best?

Bird Watching in Africa is also popular on the Eastern portion of the continent. The bulk of the tourism is in the South, but a larger number of species exist in the Eastern nations of Kenya and Tanzania than anywhere else. Boasting over 1300 species, bird watchers in Eastern Africa have the opportunity to see 15% of the world's bird population in one trip. While the number is not so striking in the South, it is still substantial at 920 species. This equates to about 10% of the world's known species.

The nations that make up the Southern bird watch areas are Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. South Africa specifically provides a number of government sponsored parks and reserves where avian life is abundant. Any birder who is interested in researching bird watching in Africa should be sure to look at Kruger National Park, Ndumu Game Reserve, Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park, West Coast National Park, the De Hoop Nature Reserve, and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. These locations provide prime habitat for many of the countries' 900 species of birds, and ensure that your trip will include many varieties of bird watching opportunities.

When considering East Africa for bird watching, Kenya provides a diverse range of opportunities. From the Central Highlands, which are heavily forested, to the lower lying lakes region, Kenya is a haven for many of Eastern Africa's bird species. When considering Kenya, be sure to check out Aberdare National Park, Amboseli National Park, Lake Baringo, Lake Nakuru, Lake Bogoria, Mount Kenya National Park and the Kakamego Forest Reserve. Several of these parks also serve as the home to various species of primates that are sure to attract your attention as you keep your binoculars turned towards the trees searching for birds.

As with any major investment, make sure that you know what you are getting before you put any money on the table to go bird watching in Africa. And, their melodic voices are a treasure to listen to. You may hear a squawk or a shrill from some birds. But, some birds some chirpy and sweet as they sing you to work in the morning. Some people record their sounds and play them for relaxation.

Bird watching also calls attention to species and naturists keep track of what species may be declining. Conservationists keep track of behavioral patterns and migration information so they are able to track birds and maintain up to date records.

Conservation starts at home. It is recommended that children learn about birds so that they are aware of the importance of conservation and protecting our environment. It will increase children?s awareness of the natural beauty of parks, wildlife, oceans, lakes, mountains and trails. Children learn through doing and what better way to learn about blue birds than to actually observe one in their natural habitat.

If you like to watch the playing, fluttering and fanciful nature of birds, watching birds in your own backyard or right outside your window can be a great joy. It's extraordinary how many different kinds of species you can see. If you think there aren't very many birds in your yard, there are a few things you can try that will attract them. With bird baths, different bird feeders and a couple of bird houses, you'll soon have some special visitors.

You'll find many different bird feeders on the market, and you will find that most of them fall into three different categories. There are hoppers, tray feeders, and tube feeders. Tube bird feeders are cylindrical, with landing places at the holes where the feed comes out. Tube bird feeders are good for various kinds of seed, as long as the opening is big enough for it to fit through. Hopper feeders will attract birds that might be leery of tube and tray feeders. Tray feeders are wonderful for birds that are smaller. If you really don't care what types of birds visit your backyard, and you would just like to watch and enjoy any bird that shows up, you can purchase a general bird seed. A lot of bird seed can appeal to a number of different varieties of birds, because it's got a number of seed varieties. If you want a particular kind of bird to come to your backyard, then you want to include a seed or food that appeals to that species.

Bird baths are a great thing to add to your backyard if you want to attract more birds. Birds love wading and splashing in the water, and if it's kept clean, that's even better. You can choose from more conventional bird baths, or you could go for something different, like a fountain that's solar powered. Bird baths with moving water will appeal to wild birds that customarily would not frequent a regular fountain, like humming birds, robins, warblers and thrushes. Birds particularly like moving water, and it easily attracts them. Bird baths also look great as garden accessories. There are those that love bird baths for the fact that they bring the birds very close. This is the perfect chance to take some fantastic photographs, and enjoy the company of the birds.

If you decide to add a birdhouse to your yard, birds could potentially nest in it. Not only will they frequent now and again, but if it's safe and secure, they might choose it as the place to lay and hatch their eggs. What a delight this would be because you could get a peek at the babies every once in a while, or when it is time for them to start flying. Not only is a birdhouse a place the birds will like, but it is a charming yard decoration too. Naturally, there are a variety of sizes, kinds and shapes of birdhouses, and the one you decide on depends on your particular taste.

Implementing these three things easily can make your backyard a little bit more accommodating for birds. There are a couple of other simple things you can add, like fragrant flowers, and crevices and openings so the birds can hide. If they feel safe in your yard, they will stick around.
